Hiwatt Guitar Amplifiers

Hiwatt guitar amplifiers have been around since 1968. The brand, along with Vox and Marshall was part of what was known as the "British" guitar amplifier sound.

We can thank The Who's Pete Townshend and John Entwistle, at least indirectly, for the brand. Both were using amps manufactured by Sound City, but asked the company if the amps could be modified to their requirements. Sound City wouldn't help them, but a former employee of Sound City came forward and did the mods, his name was Dave Reeves. He modified the L100 amps under the company name of Hylight Electronics. The new amp model became known as the Hiwatt DR103. The company would later became known, simply as Hiwatt Amplification.

In 1970 the DR103 would be changed again into what was known as the CP103 "Super Who 100" model that Townshend used almost exclusively for over a decade. 1973 saw an update to the DR103, the DR103W. Townshend used the DR103W through 1982 and occasionally since.

With artists like David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Martin Barre, and Joe Walsh (just to name a few) opting for Hiwatt amps, the company obviously make a great impact on the music world.
