Many artists have learned how to play guitar by teaching themselves, so if you're seeking to teach yourself how, you are joining thousands of others who've accomplished what you've set out to do. By taking the first step to teach yourself to play guitar you're likely to find it a very rewarding experience. After you've chosen your instrument, you will want to seek out teach yourself the names of each part of your instrument from diagrams and pictures of either an electric or acoustic guitar, depending on which instrument you are using. These pictures will help you to learn each part of your new instrument so that as you begin to learn how to play, you can refer to these parts without any confusion.
Learning fingering, or where to put your fingers on the fretboard and how to strum the strings to the music you're interested in, is the next important step. This technique is also dependent upon whether you are left or right handed, because right handed musicians use their left hand on the fretboard, and their right hand on the strings, and vice versa for left handed.
There are countless lessons available on the Internet, both written and by video to help you learn finger positioning, basics about the guitar itself and what kind of instrument you should be looking for. These are only the bare fundamentals to learning about your guitar and teaching yourself. The real fun begins when you are listening to your favorite songs and playing chords based on tablature and by ear.
Every song has a set of chords that make up the basics of that song, and the more repetitive the chords are, and the less chords in the song, the easier playing that song will be. Repeating chords will help your fingers grow strong calluses and soon you will be able to play both steel and nylon stringed instruments.
