Record Your Playing

One thing that I didn't realize helped so much, until I did it, was to record your playing. Even if you're just messing around, maybe jamming with a friend or whatever.

I had never recorded my playing until I was at a freind's one day playing in his basement. He had a nice reel-to-reel deck, and I didn't know it at the time, but was recording the whole jam session.

It's was really kind of unbelieveable, when I listened to it. I had what I thought was a pretty impressive solo. When I asked who it was, he said 'IT'S YOU!!'.

I didn't even recogonize my own playing. Don't misunderstand, I'm not an Eric Clapton, or even close, but I had evidently always underestimated my playing. I can rememebr being really depressed many times when I felt like I was never getting any better. I could copy some leads from records (I'm old, we had vinyl), but I never really felt as though I was making much progress as far as learning the fretboard.

So try and not be too hard on yourself, but make sure to get some stuff recorded. You might be making more progress than you even realize. Of course it goes the other way too. You'll also be able to find what you need work on. Regardless, the recording won't lie to you.

Give it a try, you just might surprise yourself.
