Taylor Guitar was originally a small guitar-making shop owned by Sam Radding. Bob Taylor was 18 in 1973 when he took a job at the shop. When Radding decided to sell the company, Taylor, and Kurt Listug, who was also an employee, along with Steve Schemmer, bought the small company and renamed it to Westland Music Company.
Needing a shorter name that would fit on the headstock of a guitar, and an American sounding name (moreso than Listug or Schemmer), it was decided that the new name would be Taylor.
As Listug stated, "Bob was the real guitar-maker," so Tayloe was in charge or production and design, with Listug taking on the business aspect of the company. They have built the small business into a large company emplying 550 people, as of 2008. The factory, located in El Cajon, California, has worldwide distribution. Another plant has been opened in Tecate, Mexico, just 49 miles away from the originally factory. The entry-level guitars of the Taylor line (the Baby, Big Baby, 100, and 200 series) are made along with the Taylor guitar cases in the Mexico plant.
In 2005 Bob Taylor started a second line of acoustic guitars. The R Taylor brand is ultra-premium instruments that are only available to a select few dealers in the United States only.
In 2005 Taylor also added electric guitars to their product line.
Taylor has also included the Baby Taylor models that are considered to be travel guitars. The Baby Taylor is 3/4 size of a conventional dreadnought guitar with the Big Baby being 15/16 size of a dreadnought.
With a patented bolt-on neck; the NT neck (new technology), Taylor's proprietary pickup system, the Expression System, and excellent materials, workmanship and quality control, the guitars manufactured by Taylor are of excellent quality and played by many professional musicians.
