[Please see our listing of used Gibson guitars following this brief history of Gibson.]

(Used Gibson guitars often prove to be an excellent investment, other than the benefit of having a very well-made instrument to enjoy. Many of the early model Gibsons are now worth a small fortune, in good condition. We have many used Gibson guitars listed below. Find the guitar of your dreams, enjoy playing it, and who knows, it may be increasing in value as time passes.)

Anyone that's ever seen a guitar has probably seen a Gibson guitar also. Gibson, founded in 1902, founded by it's namesake, Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, under Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co, Ltd., is one of the largest and well known of all guitar manufacturers. Orville Gibson originally produced mandolins, starting in the late 1890s.

Some of the famous names in their guitar line are the Les Paul, Flying V, ES-335, Explorer, SG and their 1936 (Electric Spanish) ES-135 and later, the ES-335. The L-5 arch-top is another guitar that is extremely famous, and rightly so.

This obviously is not meant to be a complete list of Gibson's offerings to the guitar world. For more information on Gibson, please visit their Website here.

Charlie Christian was one of the first well-known electric guitarists, and he helped to make Gibson a recognized name in the guitar world by playing their ES-150, and later, the ES-200.

The 1950s saw some innovative designs, including the oddly-shaped Flying V, the Explorer and the now wildly famous Humbucker pickup.

To try and compose a list of Gibson guitar players would be exhausting to say the least. Some of the famous players are: Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Slash, Angus Young, Duane Allman, Frank Zappa, and Ace Frehley. This is but a small sample of the many well-known guitarists that play the quality instruments.

Gibson was bought by the Norlin Corporation in the late 1960s, and the instrument quality and the company financial reserves took a drastic decline, nearly causing the company to go out of business in 1985. It's reported that it was actually (3) weeks of closing the doors!! Luckily for Gibson lovers everywhere, the company was bought and turned around into the legend it is today.

The Gibson Guitar Corporation is a privately held corporation, owned by chief executive officer Henry Juszkiewicz and president David H. (Dave) Berryman.

The Gibson name not only can be found on quality guitars, but they produce high quality mandolins also. Not to mention various other instruments like Pianos, under the Baldwin name, and drums are manufactured under the Slingerland brand name. They also produce a wide range of musical accessories.

It should also be noted that The Gibson Guitar Corporation also owns Epiphone, Kramer, Steinberger, Tobias and Valley Arts guitars.

Also, Gibson most recently purchased the Canadian guitar company, Garrison. It's not known what Gibson's plans are for the company yet.

So shop for your Gibson knowing you are buying a piece of true American heritage. Gibson has the name recognition and reputation it does for a reason, they produce quality instruments that are second to none.
