The Ovation Guitar Company, a subsidiary of Kaman Music Corporation, is based in New Hartfort, Connecticut, and is a well respected, major manufacturer of guitars, primarily steel-stringed acoustic guitars.
Ovation has set themselves apart from the rest of guitar producers by placing the guitar soundboard (front) of the guitar on a unique synthetic, composite bowl. All other manufacturers use the century's old technique of building the guitar body, (back and sides), from wood.
Charles Kaman developed the first round-back Ovation guitar in 1966. Although having a degree in aeronautical engineering, Kaman was a very active amateur musician. although Kaman was active in many fields, soon guitar production would become very lucrative.
After determining that guitar sound could be improved with their bowl design, Kaman's engineers and Luthiers went to work building the first Ovation guitars, with the first one being produced in November, 1966. This new design was, without question, an improvement in projection and ringing sustain.
Although the first official endorser of Ovation guitars was Josh White, an African-American blues-man, it wasn't until an Ovation Balladeer, being played by Glen Campbell on the Goodtime Hour show on CBS in 1968, projected the Ovation guitar onto the world stage. A year later Glen Campbell became the second celebrity endorser for Ovation guitars, and the rest, as they say, is history.
It would probably be easier to list those artists that don't play Ovation guitars, but here are a few notable players that do perform with these fine instruments - Glen Campbell, Jimmy Page, Nancy Wilson, Al Di Meola, Richie Sambora, Adrian Legg, Brian May and David Gilmour, just to name a few.
