Vox amps are legendary. Mention the AC30 and any guitarist knows exactly what you're talking about, and will most likely mention Brian May.
Vox, originally the The Jennings Organ Company was founded in Dartford Kent, England after World War II by Thomas Walter Jennings. His first successful product was an early self-powered electronic keyboard, the Univox. In 1956 the company was renamed Jennings Musical Instruments, or JMI, and in 1958 the 15-watt Vox AC15 amplifier was launched. The Shadows and other British Invasion musicians popularized the amplifier.
In 1959 under pressure to meet the sales of the Fender Twin, the AC30 was born. The rest, as they say is history. Vox became known as one of the finest amplifier manufacturers in the business. Some of the musicians to use vox equipment are the Beatles, Brian May of Queen, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Edge of U2, the Yardbirds, Kurt Cobain and scores of others.
As so many small businesses that reach unbelievable successes go, the company was bought by Japanese electronics corporation Korg in 1992.
